Raag Yaman is traditionally the first full raga taught in Hindustani music, and it is ideal on harmonium: all seven swars, exactly one black key to learn — teevra Ma (Maṙ) — and phrases so singable they teach your ear raga logic by themselves. Yaman belongs to Kalyan thaat, is sung in the first quarter of the night, and centres on Ga (vadi) answered by Ni (samvadi).

Key Takeaway:

Yaman = all shuddha swars except teevra Ma (the sharp fourth — one key right of shuddha Ma). Its signature move: melodies often start from .Ni below Sa and treat Ga as home base. Learn the aroha–avroha, then the pakad, then improvise tiny phrases around Ga.

Note the classic subtlety: in the ascent, Yaman glides from .Ni straight to Re (skipping a rest on Sa) and from Ga to Dha via Maṙ — while the descent walks every step down. This skip-up, walk-down shape is what makes Yaman sound like Yaman.

Where is teevra Ma on the keyboard?

Teevra Ma is the black key immediately to the right of shuddha Ma — the augmented fourth above Sa (F# when Sa is C). On Web Harmonium with the default layout (Sa on the E key), shuddha Ma is on Y and teevra Ma is on the 7 key. Play Sa … Maṙ … Pa slowly and listen: Maṙ leans hungrily into Pa. That leaning quality drives the whole raga. (Full black-key map in the komal & teevra guide.)

Your first week of Yaman practice

  1. Day 1–2 — Aroha/avroha: .Ni Re Ga Maṙ Dha Ni Sa' up, Sa' Ni Dha Pa Maṙ Ga Re Sa down. Ten slow rounds, singing the swar names aloud.
  2. Day 3 — Pakad: loop .Ni Re Ga Re Sa until it feels like a phrase, not five notes. Then add Pa Maṙ Ga Re Sa.
  3. Day 4 — Ga as home: play little journeys that leave and return to Ga: Ga Maṙ Dha Maṙ Ga · Ga Re .Ni Re Ga · Ga Maṙ Pa Maṙ Ga.
  4. Day 5 — Ni's answer: mirror the same journeys around Ni: Ni Re' Sa' · Dha Ni Maṙ Dha Ni.
  5. Day 6 — Alankar in Yaman: run your alankar patterns using Yaman's swars (with Maṙ) instead of the plain scale.
  6. Day 7 — Free vistaar: over a held Sa drone, improvise slow phrases using only Yaman swars, always resolving to Sa or Ga. Congratulations — that is actual raga playing.

Drone trick: on Web Harmonium, hold Sa with one finger (or a spare touch on mobile) and play phrases above it with the other fingers — the multi-touch keyboard supports it, turning the app into raga-practice mode.

Yaman vs Yaman Kalyan — what is the difference?

Yaman uses only teevra Ma. Yaman Kalyan additionally sprinkles in shuddha Ma as a delicate passing note in descent (typically slipped between two Gas: Ga Ma Ga Re Sa), giving a softer, sweeter shade. Learn pure Yaman first; the distinction will then be obvious to your ear.

Which songs are based on Yaman?

Countless bhajans, film classics, and bandishes ride on Yaman's frame — it is one of Hindustani music's most-used ragas. Once your pakad is steady, try picking out any slow devotional melody you know by ear; if it keeps landing on Ga and Ni with a bright sharp fourth, you have probably found Yaman. Continue with more beginner ragas or the structured 30-day plan.

Frequently asked questions

What are the notes of Raag Yaman?

All seven swars with teevra (sharp) Ma: Sa Re Ga Ma♯ Pa Dha Ni. Aroha: .Ni Re Ga Ma♯ Dha Ni Sa'. Avroha: Sa' Ni Dha Pa Ma♯ Ga Re Sa. Vadi is Ga, samvadi is Ni.

Why is Raag Yaman taught first to beginners?

It uses a complete seven-note scale with just one altered swar, its phrases are highly singable, and its grammar (skip up, walk down, rest on Ga) teaches raga thinking clearly without pitfalls.

Where is teevra Ma on the harmonium?

It is the black key immediately right of shuddha Ma — the sharp fourth from Sa (F♯ when Sa = C). On Web Harmonium's default layout, that is the 7 key on your computer keyboard.

What is the pakad of Raag Yaman?

The signature phrases .Ni Re Ga Re Sa and Pa Ma♯ Ga Re Sa. If you play just these two shapes over a Sa drone, listeners recognise Yaman immediately.

What time of day is Raag Yaman sung?

The first quarter of the night, roughly 6–9 pm. Its serene, devotional-romantic mood matches the transition from day to evening in the traditional time theory of ragas.

What is the difference between Yaman and Yaman Kalyan?

Yaman uses only teevra Ma. Yaman Kalyan adds an occasional shuddha Ma as a passing note in descent (Ga Ma Ga Re Sa), lending a softer color. Learn plain Yaman first.
