Note the classic subtlety: in the ascent, Yaman glides from .Ni straight to Re (skipping a rest on Sa) and from Ga to Dha via Maṙ — while the descent walks every step down. This skip-up, walk-down shape is what makes Yaman sound like Yaman.

Your first week of Yaman practice
- Day 1–2 — Aroha/avroha: .Ni Re Ga Maṙ Dha Ni Sa' up, Sa' Ni Dha Pa Maṙ Ga Re Sa down. Ten slow rounds, singing the swar names aloud.
- Day 3 — Pakad: loop .Ni Re Ga Re Sa until it feels like a phrase, not five notes. Then add Pa Maṙ Ga Re Sa.
- Day 4 — Ga as home: play little journeys that leave and return to Ga: Ga Maṙ Dha Maṙ Ga · Ga Re .Ni Re Ga · Ga Maṙ Pa Maṙ Ga.
- Day 5 — Ni's answer: mirror the same journeys around Ni: Ni Re' Sa' · Dha Ni Maṙ Dha Ni.
- Day 6 — Alankar in Yaman: run your alankar patterns using Yaman's swars (with Maṙ) instead of the plain scale.
- Day 7 — Free vistaar: over a held Sa drone, improvise slow phrases using only Yaman swars, always resolving to Sa or Ga. Congratulations — that is actual raga playing.
